Two saws, the same bar, two completely different results. One finishes a clean, burr-free cut in seconds with a blade that lasts for weeks. The other burns the blade, smears the surface and stalls the cell. The difference is almost never the machine — it is the cutting speed and feed matched to the material.
This guide gives you a working sawing parameter table for the five material families KEENSAW customers cut most: carbon & low-alloy steel, stainless, alloy & tool steel, titanium / hardened alloys, and aluminium / non-ferrous. Every number below is a starting point — dial it in using the “reading the cut” checklist in section 8. Pair the values with the right KEENSAW circular saw o band saw and you get repeatable output from day one.
Before the tables, lock down the four inputs that determine blade life and cut quality:
| Palanca | What it is | If you get it wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Surface speed (m/min) | Blade tip velocity at the cut | Too fast → burnt teeth; too slow → work-hardening & rubbing |
| Feed per tooth (mm/tooth) | Chip load each tooth takes | Too high → broken teeth; too low → work-hardening |
| Tooth pitch (TPI) | Teeth per inch / variable pitch | Wrong pitch → vibration, poor chip evacuation |
| Coolant / lube | Heat & chip removal at the kerf | Starved → heat cracks, built-up edge |
For band saws the control variable is blade speed (m/min) y feed per tooth. For circular saws it is spindle RPM and feed rate (mm/s). On a KEENSAW BSVP530 both are set on the HMI; start from the table and tune by feel.
Mild steel, 1018, 1045, low-alloy up to ~35 HRC. This is the forgiving material — wide speed window, standard bi-metal blades. Push volume here with a carbide circular saw if sections are small.
| Machine | Blade | Velocidad | Feed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sierra de cinta | M42 bimetálico, 2–3 TPI | 60–90 m/min | 0.10–0.15 mm/tooth |
| Circular saw | hoja TCT | 100–140 m/min (tip) | 0.08–0.12 mm/tooth |

Stainless is the #1 source of “why is my blade dying” calls — and the answer is almost always work-hardening. 304/316 have high work-hardening rates: if the feed is too light, the teeth rub instead of cutting, the surface hardens, and the next tooth hits armour plate. Go slower on speed, heavier on feed, coarser pitch, and flood with coolant.
| Machine | Blade | Velocidad | Feed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Band saw 304/316 | M42, 1.4–2 TPI (coarse) | 40–60 m/min | 0.10–0.16 mm/tooth |
| Band saw 17-4PH | M51 bimetálico | 30–45 m/min | 0.08–0.12 mm/tooth |
| Circular saw | TCT recubierto de PVD | 60–90 m/min (tip) | 0.06–0.10 mm/tooth |
Rule of thumb for a band saw cutting speed for stainless steel: start at 50 m/min for austenitic 304/316, drop to 35–40 for precipitation-hardened grades. See our cost-per-cut model for how blade choice shifts the economics.
Harder and more abrasive than carbon steel. 4140/4340 cut like a tougher carbon steel; H13 and D2 (die steels) need the slow, coolant-rich treatment or you will eat blades. A hardened coarse-pitch bi-metal with controlled feed is the default.
| Material | Blade | Velocidad | Feed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4140 / 4340 (<35 HRC) | M42, 2–3 TPI | 45–70 m/min | 0.09–0.13 mm/tooth |
| H13 / D2 (die steel) | Hoja de sierra de cinta M51 | 30–50 m/min | 0.06–0.10 mm/tooth |

Titanium (Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V) cuts cleanly but holds heat at the tip — low thermal conductivity means the tooth, not the chip, gets hot. Combine that with titanium’s combustibility as fine powder, and the rules are: moderate speed, generous feed (don’t rub), flood coolant, never let it glow. For feed rate for titanium sawing, think “positive, continuous chip, no sparks.”
| Machine | Blade | Velocidad | Feed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Band saw Ti-6Al-4V | M42, coarse 1.4–2 TPI | 25–45 m/min | 0.08–0.13 mm/tooth |
| Circular saw Ti | PVD TCT, sharp geometry | 40–70 m/min (tip) | 0.05–0.09 mm/tooth |
If you see blue sparks at the kerf, you are too fast or too dry — back off immediately. The forging billet guide covers heavier sections that often pair with titanium in aerospace cells.
Aluminium wants to be cut fast — high speed, fast feed, and a blade with enough gullet to clear the big gummy chips. The risk is built-up edge and clogging, not heat. Use a dedicated non-ferrous blade (high tooth count, zero/negative rake) and you can run a carbide circular saw at very high rates.
| Machine | Blade | Velocidad | Feed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Band saw Al | M42, 4–6 TPI (fast) | 150–250 m/min | 0.15–0.25 mm/tooth |
| Circular saw Al | TCT, non-ferrous geometry | 300–600 m/min (tip) | 0.10–0.20 mm/tooth |

Numbers get you close; the cut surface tells you the truth. Use this checklist on the first bar of every new job:
A coarse-pitch M42 bi-metal band saw blade (1.4–2 TPI) or a sharp-geometry PVD-coated TCT circular blade, run at 25–45 m/min with generous flood coolant. Never let the kerf glow — titanium heat builds at the tooth, not the chip.
Usually not for heat — aluminium dissipates well — but a light mist or wax lube prevents built-up edge and clears gummy chips at high feed. Dry cutting is fine on a dedicated non-ferrous blade at moderate rates.
Signs: chipped or missing teeth, loud cracking, long stringy burr, and a rough cut face. Back the feed off 15–20% and confirm chips return to tight curls.
Las tablas anteriores son la forma más rápida de dejar de quemar espadas y comenzar a alcanzar las especificaciones. Haga coincidir el material → hoja → velocidad → avance, luego ajuste según la forma de la viruta.
